GeekcampSG 2009 Feedback

Page history last edited by PBworks.com 7 months ago

Some simple questionaire. Thanks @hongster for suggesting.

Please add your name (if you're comfy) followed by your response. Thanks!

Which is your favourite talk?

jasonong: Too busy running around to catch every talk (need more volunteers *wink*). I love the NLP talk.

justinlee: I wish I could stay for the NLP talk, but I love the BDD talk. Thumbs up!

tardate(paulg): All were great. NLP, Android and MakeAffinity were my tops, because they delved into areas I don't normally think about

cheeaun: MakeAffinity robotics. Too bad no robots to see.

@mhisham: I love the talk by Francis Bond on Natural Language Processing - which I have initially mistaken as Neural Linguistic Programming. LoLx

dineshraju: CouchDB one was interesting.

chinyong: Meng's Survey was enjoyable. CouchDB was interesting (learning point of view) and the NLP one was made much easy to comprehend by Francis Bond.

@bleongcw: I liked the Python and Android talk plus the survey done by Meng on the geeks. :)

tom:  just managed to catch 2 - survey & NLP - both were good.

@iamclovin: I liked the iPhone talk (even though it wasn't geeky-enough as a few ppl remarked, it drew real-life experiences and I think for people who don't know abt XCode, IB etc. it probably helped to whet their appetite), the bash talk and the BDD talk.

How was the food?

jasonong: Just enough? Could have proper lunch spread with more funds.

hongster: Pizza will be great!

justinlee: Good. But I think the amount of information is good enough for lunch.

tardate(paulg): lunch as fine, pizza would be good (but tends to disappear too quick if you ever try to serve it!). It would have been good to finish a bit earlier so able to get more people into a post-event drinks/dinner conversation

cheeaun: No Subway?

@mhisham: Well, I was fasting. But geeks go hand-in-hand with pizza! just sayin. :)

dineshraju: Good.

chinyong: Free food is always good.

@bleongcw: Food - good enough. We are geeks, what else more we expect?

tom: good enff

@iamclovin: no problems at all.

Is the internet connectivity sufficient?

jasonong: Should have given a dedicated line to speakers & ustreamer

hongster: The connection is ok.

justinlee: Could be better. Since many of us were tweeting.

tardate(paulg):morning was fine, but I think many of us had probs in the afternoon SNAFU

cheeaun: Slowness.

@mhisham: Well I was Ustreaming - not sure who else does; I suppose I may have contributed to everyone's latent connection. But we are geeks right, we can solve this. right? :)

chinyong: wireless@sg was a big fail strangely. But connection was good in the morning and went downhill after lunch. More power strips will be good.

@bleongcw Hmmm, I should probably thank people for sharing connections.

tom: thanks to sneha, meng for connectivity - my slides would have had no pix otherwise.

@iamclovin: was kinda up down, esp when presenters wanted to do live demos

Did you like the venue?

jasonong: I love it except aircon too cold...

hongster: I am fine with the venue.

justinlee: Agreed, aircon is too cold.

tardate(paulg): fine

cheeaun: Cool.

@mhisham: imho, Microsoft would be a better venue as they have a lot of power point connections and their meeting/function rooms are really meant to geek-out! :)

dineshraju: Yup. Might need a bigger place if future geekcamps have larger crowds.

chinyong: venue is good. accessible.

@bleongcw: Fantastic venue.

tom: good. a little to cold. Microsoft pad even colder.

@iamclovin: venue was awesome!

Would you like to have future geekcamps?

jasonong: Yes plz!

hongster: Yes!

justinlee: More please.

tardate(paulg): yes yes yes

cheeaun: Yeap, sure.

@mhisham: Definitely! :)

dineshraju: Definitely.

chinyong: Yes.

@bleongcw: A resounding YES!

tom: yes.

@iamclovin: definitely!

What topics would you like to see in the future geekcamps?

jasonong: Arduino + Home automation, Face recognition technology by Pasha

hongster: Guided Tour in Linux Kernal.

justinlee: WEP hacking (on the spot). More geeky topics.

tardate(paulg): +1 to jasonong/hongster/justinlee's suggestions. Basically, I think the best topics are the ones that take us into the "unknown" (NLP was a good example this time around). They really get your attention and interest, as opposed to the "usual suspects" dev topics.

@mhisham: Some practical examples of Augmented Reality applications would be nice to look at how its done underneath the bonnet.

@bleongcw: Hmmm, proper iPhone development (Objective C, XCode).

tom: can i do one on arduino?

@iamclovin: +1 for arduino, anything data-mining-related, Google Wave (@cheeaun piqued curiosity but for Murphy's law)

What improvements would you like to see in the future geekcamps?

jasonong: A little more funds for t-shirts!

hongster: A geekcamp shirt for participant would be nice.

justinlee: Lightning talks could have been managed properly. Timing too. And breaks in between sessions.

tardate(paulg): +1 for shirts. If anything, packed too many sessions in this time - agree with Justin that more time for breaks/discussion/hands-on would be good, as well as not going too late so that can get more people into a post-event drinks/dinner conversation (be good if a post-event was formally arranged and part of the schedule. get APB as sponsors;-)

cheeaun: Try lightning talks to be earlier instead of at the end of all sessions. And also GeekCamp stickers.

@mhisham: If you were to see previous #BarCampSg or #BarCamps - there is always someone assigned to inform the speaker if he has 5 minutes to go or running out of time. A bigger board for announcements would be good too. As well as a board for lightning sessions.

dineshraju: Could we get the slides of the presentations posted somewhere? Any videos of the talks on youtube?

chinyong: tshirts!

@bleongcw: Geekcamp merchandise. :)

tom: perhaps the geek side of barcamp could be geekcamp.  and a robocamp?

@iamclovin: Not sure if this is feasible if it's a one-day event, but something like a collaborative coding session, where at the end of a few hours, we release an open-source product/library (ppl familiar with different languages either group together or collaborate)

How often would you like geekcamp to be held?

jasonong: 1/year for now

hongster: Twice a year?

justinlee: 4 times a year? :P

tardate(paulg): at least once a year for this kind of conference event. If people want to do more frequently, maybe geekcampsg.point-release could be more focused on a certain topic, or more hands-on/install-fest-like

@mhisham: Once a year; so we can better reflect on whats really good to talk about in terms of tech-talk, less marketing pitches etc.

dineshraju: Twice a year.

chinyong: Once a year, or when the organising team gets bigger. With higher frequency comes greater responsibilities.

@bleongcw: Every quarter of the year. :)

tom: ...

@iamclovin: Once a year I guess.

How much should the geekcampsg organisers get paid?

tardate(paulg): oh, about 10 tonnes of WoW gold. priceless.

jasonong: 1 Ultimate Geek badge in stackoverflow

hongster: +1 for jasonong

This wiki gets locked when someone's editing. Not good for feedback...

If you were to use twitter and use #BarCampSg as the tag - you can list out all the questions here and people can tweet their replies

for eg

#BarCampSg rply Qns1 - I love the talk by Francis Bond on NLP - which I have initially mistaken as Neural Linguistic Programming. LoLx

I think Geekcamp is addictive! I already have plan to talk about Rubik's Cube for next Geekcamp ;)

Rubik's Cube programming? :P

Writing a program to unscramble Rubik Cube is too chim for me. But I can share all the techniques I know, maybe some other geeks can turn it into an code.

It sounds like a hackathon. @jasonong and i have started (informally) discussion on a #HackCampSg.
